Among the stories featured in From Dark Places is a boy who makes a pact with the devil, a soul caught between life and death and a wife's parting letter from hell to her unfaithful husband who decides to leave a more than the family pet cooking in the oven.
There is also the a teenage girl troubled by unrelenting voices, an over-jealous boyfriend whose competition is a work of fiction and the husband who spends his time in the garden shed working on a secret project that he seems to think might have darker implications than his wife.

E.J. Newman's characters are well defined and projected with believable clarity, while several scenarios vary from total fantasy to well observed stories that wouldn't seem out of place as exposes in daily newspapers.
Each short story lasts for approximately 10 minutes, making this a wonderful format to play with and allowing the listener to dip in and out of the collection with ease. For instance the listener can listen to a few stories in one sitting, or alternately one if going on a short journey or just taking time out for 15 minutes.
