A look at Chicago based singer-songwriter Emily Hurd's eighth album "Long Lost Ghosts", consisting of songs composed on the ukulele.

Emily Hurd has been delighting fans with her breathtaking vocals, honest song writing and all encompassing musical talent since her debut album Lines in 2005.

Hailing from Rockford, Illinois and now based in Chicago, Emily’s eighth album Long Lost Ghosts will be released on January 1st 2012.

Emily Hurd's Long Lost Ghosts Features "Sweeping Folk Songs"

Composed entirely on the Ukulele following an injury which prevented Emily from playing the piano for several months, Long Lost Ghosts is a melodic breeze of country driven folk songs complimented with strings, percussion and uplifting lyrics.

Indeed, Long Lost Ghosts doesn’t get tied down to any specific genre. Emily herself describes the album as "sweeping folk songs with such intense acoustic energy" and that acoustic energy follows through from beginning to end with catchy rhythms and honest open music.

Emily who sings as well as plays piano and ukulele on the album is also joined by a talented group of musicians including album producer John Abbey on rhythm guitar, Darren Garvey on drums and percussion, Maria McCullough on fiddle and Sue Demel on background vocals.

Long Lost Ghosts Track By Track

Long Lost Ghosts kicks off the with the albums title track, an upbeat reflective song featuring lush instrumentation and a sing-along chorus. The album continues in fine form with the inspired poetry of A Lot Like You, and the piano pop of My Favourite Part, which would undoubtedly serve Tori Amos well if she ever decided to cover it.

I Love You Too is a catchy ballad in a bluegrass style featuring forthright lyrics and additional hand claps. There is further poetic wordplay in the quieter moments of the beautiful Irreparably Yours.

Emily displays a wide vocal range on the album too, from the gentleness of Silent Conversations to the uplifting I Won’t Tell A Soul. The lady also sings the blues in a good way on Brand New, a song both reflective on the past and looking forward to the future, purely coincidental given the albums timely new year release but also highly appropriate.

The album draws to a close with the inspirational Skipping Stones and the final track, the beautifully sensitive piano vocal number Easy Call.

Long Lost Ghosts - The First Essential Album Of 2012

Unlike most current albums, Long Lost Ghosts is not just a collection of songs, it is an album that deserves to be appreciated as a whole as well as each track on its own individual merits.

Long Lost Ghosts will be available on compact disc and to download from iTunes from January 1st 2012 and will certainly be the first and foremost essential album to own in the New Year.
