One of the most popular beat groups of the 1960s, The Searchers have just announced dates for their 2012 UK tour.
Consisting of John McNally, Frank Allen, Spencer James and Scott Ottaway the bands UK tour kicks off on March 9 and continues through to June 3, 2012.
The Searchers From Skiffle Group To 1960s Chart Toppers
John McNally founded the Searchers in the late fifties as a skiffle rock and roll group in the Kirkdale district of Liverpool. Along with Chris Curtis, Tony Jackson Mike Pender and Johnny Sandon the group gained local fame as Johnny Sandon and The Searchers.
Following Sandon's departure in 1962 and the emergence of fellow Liverpudlians The Beatles in the music charts, The Searchers gained live experience at Hamburg's Star Club.
It was at The Star Club they met bassist and future Searcher, Frank Allen at the time playing with Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers. Whilst playing in Hamburg, a recording of the song Sweets For My Sweet which they recorded with Pye records producer Tony Hatch shot to Number One in the UK charts following a glowing endorsement from John Lennon.
A run of hits followed including Sugar and Spice, Needles and Pins, Don't Throw Your Love Away and When You Walk In The Room.
The Searchers Line-Up Changes - Through The Years
Frank Allen replaced Tony Jackson in 1964 and there was further line up changes in 1966. Following the bands Australian tour with the Rolling Stones, drummer Chris Curtis left and was replaced by a succession of drummers. Much later in 1985, Mike Pender left and was succeeded by Spencer James formerly of First Class.
The Searchers popularity has continued to endure over the decades and their legacy looks set to continue. The latest addition to the band, drummer Scott Ottaway joined The Searchers in 2011. Scott, who was born in 1972, is the youngest member to grace the band but was instantly accepted by the band and attendees of their concerts as a first class musician.
The Searchers concerts have become a 'must' for fans of their music and the 1960s music scene in general. Not only does the audience get to hear most of the groups many chart hits, but also B sides, album tracks and a host of fascinating facts about the band's history from Frank and John.
